The Biggest Lie Ever Told!
by Charles Strand

Depending on how we choose to measure the size or extent of dishonesty, the constant claim that our tap water is safe to drink may very well be the biggest lie ever told. On a National and local basis, it is certainly one of the most serious and large scale deceptions of our time.

Because it effects virtually everyone, this issue needs to be faced openly, honestly and without hypocrisy. Lying about the safety of the water we drink and allow our children to drink, whether through ignorance, omission or outright deception, very likely causes more suffering than any act of violence ever committed. Each year in America, tens of thousands of people get sick and die from water laced with toxic contaminants, parasites and heavy metals.

While our water may be free from bacteria, due to the addition of chlorine and ammonia, it is known to contain dozens, if not hundreds of toxic SOCs (synthetic organic chemicals). A recent study by the Ralph Nader Research Group reported that “after reviewing over 10,000 pages of EPA documents acquired through the Freedom Of Information Act… U.S. drinking water contains more than 2100 toxic chemicals that can cause cancer.” Tap water commonly contains Arsenic, barium and virtually always lead. All of these compounds are known to have adverse health effects even at very low levels.

Lead is one of the best examples of a known health risk that is constantly covered up. It has been proven that any level of lead in our water poses a serious health risk, especially to children. This is evident in the EPA’s guideline for lead levels in drinking water , -0- ppb (parts per billion) is the MCLG (max. contaminant level goal). The MCLG is set at “the level at which there is no known or suspected risk to health.” Every recent study supports the fact that any level of lead in our water is “UNSAFE”. The U.S. E.P.A. states that “Each year in the U.S., lead in drinking water contributes to over 560,000 cases of permanent and irreversible childhood learning disorders and 680,000 cases of hypertension.” Won’t read that in your local “Drinking Water Quality Report”. Atazine, the most widely used weed killer, is present in virtually most all water supplies. It’s toxicity is known to have been grossly underestimated, yet no mention of any potential risk in our “Water Quality Reports”.

The E.P.A. is currently investigating the manufacturer of Atrazine for “covering up studies on it’s risks.” Recent testing on laboratory animals has shown that as little as 0.1 parts per billion of atrazine in drinking water causes cell mutations and deformaties. My city’s water contains at least .16 ppb of Atrazine (last year’s report .36 ppb), still no mention of any potential risk in our “Water Quality Report”. Atrazine is known to have tragic effects on children and infants!

THMs (trihalomathanes) are a group of chemical compounds that have recently been shown to be one of the biggest contributors to the “current cancer epidemic”. THMs have been linked to colon, bladder, breast, and pancreatic cancer as well as birth defects and neural disorders, (American Journal Of Public Health). Fort Worth, Dallas, Grand Prairie, Arlington, Plano and virtually all chlorinated water systems have THMs that range from 5 ppb to over 80 ppb! (again, no mention of any risk)

1 Fort Worth water contains lead, barium, atrazine and at least 10 SOCs (synthetic organic chemicals) Chlorine, something we’re all told is beneficial for drinking water, can often be found in local water supplies at levels higher than is recommended safe to swim in! A $5.00 pool test kit will yield surprising results when used to test tap water in most cases. (highly recommended project).

Many other contaminants, including the gasoline additive MTBE, traces of prescription drugs, antibiotics from feed lot run-off , and any number of the over 85,000 toxic chemicals that are used daily in our society… can also regularly be found in our local water systems. The E.P.A. regulations only require water utilities to test for about 86 contaminants, and it’s a self-policed industry!

There are over 250,000 violations to the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act each year in America! Erik Olsen, Senior Attorney/ Natural Resources Defense Council.

The bottom line is that 75 years ago, before we had all of these synthetic chemicals in our water… 1 in 50 Americans could expect to get cancer in their life time, today 1 in 3 will suffer from this man made disease, 1 in 2 males!

In reality, we have no one to blame but ourselves. It’s our activities and quest for convenience that has created this chemical soup we call tap water.

We live under the misconception that we can pour toxic cleaners and solvents down the drain, go to the car wash and spray green foam on our tires to melt road grime off of our shinny wheels and spray billions of pounds of herbicides and pesticides on our lawns and fields so they are a darker shade of green than our neighbors… and still have “Healthy water”, not hardly! We still dispose of toxic chemicals with injection wells, lagoons and land fills... all of which simply flow into our water resources. We don’t have any “new water”, our planet simply re-cycles and re-uses our extremely finite water supplies over and over. And as the chemical concentrations increase, so does degenerative disease… almost in an exact proportion!

So while we can’t blame our water utilities for the poor quality of our water, we can demand that they be honest about it!

Stop sending us reports and posting signs telling of our cities “superior water”, or “High Quality” try something original… tell the truth!

In October of 1998, the U.S. E.P.A. added an amendment to the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act, appropriately titled “The Right To Know Clause”, that is supposed to force water utilities to give honest and “easily interpretable” annual water quality reports to consumers. For the most part this law has been ignored. The reports are inaccurate, misleading and in many cases blatantly FALSE!

“I challenge any public water utility official to dispute, debate or even comment on this topic…”
